Cant connect outside of LAN

Postby PL8STLR » Wed Jun 15, 2011 9:35 am

Recently purchased and turned on screen sharing in my system preferences on my iMac. According to your on-screen instructions, that should have been enough. While I can effortlessly connect when I am on my home wifi (but why would anyone really need to do that), I cant connect when outside of my home, either on 3g or at an outside wifi. I have an iMac OS 10.6.6, an iPhone 4 and iPad 2. HELP!!!!

Connecting from the internet requires some extra work; you need to tell your Router to accept icoming connections from Remoter, and where to redirect them to. This is done by using the port-forwarding feature of your Router. Simply port-forward TCP port 5900 into the local IP address of the computer you want to connect to.
You also need to use your public IP address; the local IP address is not usable from the internet. To get your public IP, you can go here from your LAN:

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. I have purchased the app two days ago and I have to say it´s really great (if it works ;)). When I am in my home wifi I have also no problems to connect to my computer, but it doesn´t work over 3g yet and I have no plan what I have to do (I am not an expert unfortunately :( ^^). So I found the .pdf "Remoter_Detailed_Instructions" but a lot of the explanations are only for mac...

For example I have no plan what is done at the step "DynDNS". I think I have understood the reason why you are using DynDNS but is it correct that I dont have to use it? I also dont understand the step "DHCP reservation". In my router i can find "DHCP", but the only thing I can see is that DHCP is on. In DHCP I can also see "Start IP" and "End IP".

In my router there is also "NAT and Port Rules". In "Port Forwarding" I created a rule for TCP 5900, but it still doesn´t work.

Could you please tell me: What IP do I have to connect to via iPhone? Is that my public IP? There are so much IPs, Mac-adresses... I have no plan what to do ^^. Thank you :)!

Correct, you don't need to use dyndns (or similar service), it's just for convenience, as ISP usually change your IP address. But your dyndns hostname remains the same.

I also dont understand the step "DHCP reservation". In my router i can find "DHCP", but the only thing I can see is that DHCP is on. In DHCP I can also see "Start IP" and "End IP".

If you can't set up static IPs in your router, then you can configure your computer to use a static IP.

In Remoter, when connecting from the public internet, the only IP address Remoter needs is your public IP address (the one you get with the whatsmyip.com while in your LAN). That allows Remoter to connect to your Router, then the router passes the connection over to your computer (you tell your router which computer you need to connect to using the port-forwarding).

Ok first I would like to thank you for your fast support, thats great :)!

Ok, now i know what I have to do in remoter. So now I get a new error when trying to connect to the computer over 3g: "disconnected. VNC connection failed: authentication rejected". EDIT: Wow, it works :)! I had wrong settings in "Admin Properties" :).

You say i don´t need DynDNS, but I need the dyndns hostname? If I dont have a static IP I always have to look at "whatymyip" again and then use this IP in remoter, correct?

Great! Thanks for letting me know!

While you don't strictly need dyndns, I recommend it exactly because of that. While your ISP may not change your IP often, unless you have a static public IP with your ISP, it WILL change at some point; and then you will have to be home to run whatsmyip and update Remoter. If you use dyndns, then you just enter the dyndns hostname in Remoter, and this always points to your public IP, even if it changes. (That's why you need to install the dyndns service, or set up your router (if your router supports dyndns)).

Ok, thank you very much for your fast and perfect support again!

I´m going to try out dyndns, my router supports it.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I cant seem to find a recent posts that show how to port-forward using my configuration of an iMac OS 10.6.6 with Airport Extreme (airport utility 5.5.3). Can you provide a simple step-by-step instruction for myself and others similarly situated on how to follow your prior instructions so that we can access our computers using the internet away from home (or 3g). Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately the link you provided instructs on how to setup a very old airport extreme. The current model and OS (which is why I provided it in the earlier requests for help) look very different and because of my unfamiliarity with this area not at all user friendly. What would be helpful is to share a set of up-to-date instructions using the current model Extreme and OS (both for Mac and Extreme).
