I don't know. It could be your laptop's firewall preventing the VNC server from connecting.
Try opening a console (cmd in windows, terminal in Mac) and telnetting over to the laptop at port 5900, if you get a response, then the computer is accessible, if not, then either the VNC server is not running, or the firewall is blocking it.
telnet 192.168.1.100 5900
(where 192.168.1.100 is the laptop IP address)
