[Solved] R-VNC crashes right after startup

Postby Franky » Thu Oct 31, 2013 4:02 am

Hi,

8 hours ago I was able to use R-VNC 4.5.2 (latest version from AppStore) as usual on my iPad1, iOS 5.1.1.
Since this morning 07:00 CET R-VNC shows its splashscreen, then the configured sessions for at most a few seconds and then just disappears. It's still in the 'running tasks' list (double click on the home button).
I already switched off the device completely and right after startup starting R-VNC. No success.

Please fix, this app is the reason I carry the iPad with me.

Thank you.

P.S. I did 'nothing' in between switching the device off yesterday and on today. So no updates etc., except Apple or you did sth w/o my knowledge and consent.
P.P.S. according to the packet log of my router a crashreport was sent to reports.crashlytics.com (BTW: I did NOT authorize that! I would like to be ASKED before data flows off my device.)

before you ask: There is no crashdump again. There should be at least 10 from my tries today to start the app, but
latest file I have is 'Remoter VNC_2013-07-30-230124_Frankys-iPad.crash' with filedate 20131031-08:19 which shows I just synced the device.

Hi,

This seems to be caused by an extraneous response from Apple for in-app-purchases. We're looking into it, but can't recreate. Is the problem gone?
We haven't been able to recreate, so believe it's only happening with responses from some servers.

This happens on startup, so you *might* be able to work-around it by temporarily disabling WiFi, starting Remoter, waiting a little bit (maybe 15-30 seconds), then re-enabling WiFi.

Please let us know if this helps..

Thank you, and sorry for the inconvenience!

Raf.

bless you, raf!
It still happened at the time of this post.
But that disabling-WLAN-trick* did it. After ONCE applying that trick I can now normally open R-VNC as yesterday, even after 'rebooting' the iPad.

* actually enabling 'Airplane Mode' on GSM enabled devices

P.S. I still have the packet log from my router (pcap format, to be opened with e.g. Wireshark). Would that help you?
P.P.S. bloody iDiots!

I had exactly the same problem on my iPhone 4S this morning, everything was fine last night and then I woke up and it wasn't. It kind of spoiled the morning … imagine a day without Remoter? Yikes.
I restarted R-VNC, the phone an reinstalled the app to no avail.
I tried disabling WLAN but it just delayed the crash as it used the mobile connection, it felt obvious that something came through the connection that it didn't like.

Now everything is fine again.
I have a crash log and attach it in case it might be of any help.

One funny thing is, I use an iPad (4th gen) as well, there I had no problem.

Thanks everybody,

The problem was caused by Apple's in-app-purchase servers returning nil data all of a sudden starting Wednesday night for some users. This had never happened before (and seems to have cleared up already).
Remoter did not handle this unexpected case correctly and it caused it to crash.
The code has been fixed, and submitted to Apple for review. Apple also approved an expedited review for this case, so the new version will probably be out tomorrow.
