Cannot access keyboard

Postby Gga » Wed Mar 14, 2012 2:01 pm

Last week I could not access the remoter keyboard. I did the update and the keyboard came back. Today I no longer can access the keyboard.

I get the strip showing the keyboard symbol etc but when I press on it the only thing I get is single row showing the up down left right arrows etc but these are still overlaid by the previous symbols. The main keyboard does not appear.

This is with ipad2 and Datasat AP20.

This behavior probably indicates you have a paired bluetooth keyboard around. To test this, you can always disable the bluetooth function in your iOS device. Remoter does not control the keyboard coming up, this is OS controlled.

Thanks,
Raf.

Bluetooth on my ipad2 is and always has been off. I believe the only bluetooth devices I have are the remotes with my roku and dishtv.

One line of the keyboard does appear. Can I reinstall remoter?

This message sent from my ipad2 using the keyboard, so the keyboard can work.

Thanks for your help.

This is very strange. Can you check your Remoter Config settings for external keyboard? Make sure it's off.
Can you also post a screenshot of the behavior? Thank you!

No solution yet.

I also have Mocha Lite VNC and it displays the keyboard just fine, although I don't like it as well as Remoter.

A screenshot is a bit cumbersome to do right now (BTW Mocha does have a screen capture feature that you might want to add). Let me describe what happens as it is fairly simple. The screen for my component (Datasat AP20) displays perfectly. At the top and bottom are horizontal bars one icon high containing among other icons the keyboard icon. When I press the keyboard icon another bar one icon high overlays the bottom bar (one can see both bars). The new bar contains Up, Down, Left, and Right keys but only two of them can be accessed because the original bar is covering the other two keys. The actual keyboard never appears.

As mentioned, I have had access to the keyboard since I bought Remoter, lost the keyboard about 3 weeks ago, got it back when I updated Remoter, and then a week later lost it again.

How about a reinstallation of Remoter?

I am seeing the same issues on my iphone while running Remoter. I've noticed that several things can provide a temporary workaround. Reinstalling the app, as you've mentioned also works on the iphone, at least for a while. Eventually the keyboard becomes inaccessible again. Also a reboot will provide a temporary fix for the keyboard in Remoter. Also just forcing the app to stop seems to work (for a while). So that is what I have been doing as a workaround - just forcing stop Remoter each time I use it. Kind of a pain, but it does allow use of the keyboard for a while.

Thanks for all the feedback on this issue, guys.
I'm looking into it, and I've opened a track ticket about it.
Please help me recreate it, by posting info about your setup:
-device type, and firmware
-number of sessions running simultaneously when this happens
-how long it takes for this to happen

I haven't been able to recreate it so far, but I'm still looking into it. It will be hard to test any fixes if I can't recreate it.

Thank you!,

Raf

Hi Raf,

I can recreate this on my iphone by making sure there are lots of apps already running in the background, including Remoter, before starting or switcing to Remoter. On the other hand, if I close all background apps before starting Remoter, then the keyboard functions as expected. So it seems to be a function of what is running in the background when Remoter trys to call the keyboard function. Hope that helps recreate the problem on your test systems.

My device: iphone 3GS
ios: 4.1
Model: MC136LL

I had a similar issue with the keyboard when establishing an SSH or Telnet connection. I felt it is related to the "Restore State" in the advanced settings. When this option is ON, the keyboard shows up, then disappears and then shows up again at the time when the connection is being established. After that I found that I cannot access the keyboard.

What I ended up doing is setting the "Restore State" to OFF. I am also waiting for a couple of seconds after a connection is established before pressing the keyboard button and it seems to be working fine this way.

I am not sure whether this is the source of the problem or the running tasks on the background, because I also did kill the other tasks before starting the remoter.
