Lagging screen updates / audio (iPhone 4 / Snow Leopard)

Postby aero » Tue Nov 29, 2011 8:36 pm

Symptoms:
Able to establish a connection successfully but it takes a LONG time to connect (estimated >1 min).
Audio comes through my iPhone but it is very choppy and delayed - for example when listening to audio streaming in iTunes, the iPhone will be spitting out blurbs of the previous song after the iTunes player is 45 seconds into the next song!
Screen updates are extremely slow, even after forcing a manual update (i.e. >15 seconds estimated)
Mouse clicks also take a long time to hit the server. (>15 sec delay to close a window, IF the window is still there!)

System & Configuration Information:
Remoter VNC version: 3.2
Remoter Fusion version: 0.8.5 on server (MacBook)
Device: iPhone 4
iOS: version 5.0.1

Remoter Fusion setup: Off (had problems with Remoter Complete so turned this off)
Remote Management turned OFF in System Preferences. (Configured manually using OS Screen Sharing settings --> VNC password ON)
Server type: VNC / Screen sharing
VNC port: 5900
Server: OSX Snow Leopard (10.6.8) running on Macbook

JPEG quality: default
Compression: default
Color depth: 16bpp
Heartbeat setting: off (default but tested it with ON and there was no perceptible difference)

Router: NETGEAR MR814v2
Manual port forwarding: 15900 and 5900 to server local IP (192.168.0.4)
UPnP: TCP, UDP on 29350, forwarding to another local computer (unrelated but might be relevant?)

Anything I can tweak to reduce the latency?
If you need any other information just let me know.
Cheers.

Hi aero,

Yes, that latency is not normal. Are you experiencing this while on 3G / Local WiFi / other wifi?
I would attribute it to latency in the network; I connect to my SL machine while on 3G all the time, and latency is not that bad, I even listen to spotify with no problems.
Make sure you're not using any upload intensive apps in your network while you're trying to connect. BitTorrent is a big offender here, but it could be something else. You might also want to consider getting a router with QoS support, and give VNC priority over bulk traffic.

Hope this helps,
Raf.

Thanks for the reply - I've been using local wifi but no other data-intensive apps were running at the same time.

I'd like to test it on 3G but my plan is very limited. How much data does it use per min (roughly)?

I'm actually not sure how much bandwidth is used. It really depends on how intensive the screen you're sharing is, how much it changes, and the jpeg compression.
Using local wifi, and if nothing else is using the network it should work really fast. Please try rebooting your Mac and your router, maybe something is a bad state.
