Connect to local Mac with screen sharing? [Solved]

Postby Spinland » Fri Aug 26, 2011 8:42 pm

I can VPN in from outside my local network (via my gateway server running a VPN server) just fine, but that seems like overkill when I'm home and just want to access my Mac with screen sharing. Unfortunately although some of the descriptions I've read seem to hint that's possible, I can't find that protocol on the list, nor any way to list local machines announcing over Bonjour. The VNC setting wants a specific port, and 5900 ain't it. Is there some way simply to connect to a local Mac? I can't believe I need to go out over the Internet and VPN back in just to get to local screen sharing.

I'm running the VNC app on an iPad1, and my Mac is running Lion.

Thanks!

Hi!,

Screen Sharing uses the VNC standard, and it always runs on port 5900. When at home, don't use the VPN, and simply connect to your Mac using VNC and port 5900. It should work.. Unless I'm missing something from your description.

Hi, Raf.

For some reason that's not working, I get connection rejected on that port.

My setup is a Mac Mini Server running the VPN server, and from the outside I can then connect to the Mac via it's internal IP address and port 5900 as you say. But when I try to go there with no VPN session, while the iPad is on the same net, it gets rejected.

I'm baffled.

The rejection message says it's because I'm not running a VNC server on the Mac? But screen sharing is active and I can access it when I come in via VPN.

Okay, found the problem and it's goofy. My iPad decided to join my guest network instead of the home one. When I just went to try VPN again I happened to notice the link title. All working now.

Sorry to bother you.
