Hi Raf,

it was just an illusion … now I'm really scratching my head

I launch the Portmap app, it open the damn port 5900, I launch the Remoter VNC, I can connect to my MacPro via 3G, great.
I close the Portmap, and … the port 5900 close itself so …

I launch the Portmap app again, it open the port 5900, then I go to the router setup/UPnP and the port 5900 is there, click APPLY. Then click to any another router setup menu on the left, doesn't matter which one, and back to UPnP … the port 5900 is gone.

How can I say to my beautiful Netgear router that the port 5900 must be enabled forever? I really wish the Netgear setup have a Port Forwarding menu, everything would be much easier.

About the secure SSH I'm on Mac and I always be connected to a Mac so if OSX has the SSH, fine.
I'll get the full version cos I need encrypted traffic … even if I'm starting to feel a bit discomforted.
I may need a beer or two

ciao

P.S.
In the attached image, you can see what I see on the Netgear setup menu.

Dan,

Try the UPnP menu. Port Mapping / Port Forwarding is probably there.

Port Mapper needs to stay running so that the port mapping stays. Just right click on the dock icon, and set it to run on startup. You can close it with the red top-left button, it will continue to run in the background.

Have a good night!.

I found a page with some info on port forwarding for Netgear routers. Since I'm not sure what model you have, this might help. http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101145.asp

Hi Raf,

I (think) did it again. FYI and everyone else fighting with Netgear stuff:

I had to go in the Content Filtering/Firewall Rules and open an Inbound rule allowing port 5900, but it wasn't enough. Then I had to click to Content Filtering/Services, add a service for port 5900 and apply. At that point I could access to my working machine via Remote VNC through 3G.

I've a "timeout disconnect" (fixable?) and a screen refresh loooong delay issue … but it works.
By the way, I've added the SSH feature to Remote VNC so I'll start another journey through port 22 and eventually I'll find a job as a port forwarding consultant, but I may need a mug of espresso first :geek:

A mug of espresso! That's a lot of espresso :)

To prevent the timeout issue, go into Remoter Config, and disable the "Connection Heartbeat" setting..

Good luck with SSH, let me know how it goes.

Hey I'm in Italy, espresso, pasta … aren't you aware about all the stereotype? :)
I'll try to understand the SSH and I'll let you know how it goes, thanks Raf

I'm in the same boat. I am on Mac OS X 10.6.8. I am using a Cisco E1000 router and I have added the DynDNS.com app, went into my router and reserved the mac address for my iPad and iPhone in the DHCP reservation. Was I supposed to add my computer as well? I can't access my airport utilities and get all that info that you have there. It won't let me. It can't even see my router even though the router is working just fine. Help! How do I forward port to 5900? I have yet to figure that one out.

I'm currently working on an offering that will do all the setup for you. It's composed of a Mac utility and a server on the internet. I won't charge a recurring fee, only Remoter Complete will be needed for it to work.
It will register your Mac with the server, and also do the port mapping work for you. I might post a beta of it; it can help with the port mapping part.
In the mean time, you can try the port mapper app from here: http://www.codingmonkeys.de/portmap/download
Just tell it to do a VNC mapping.
