SSH Manager (2.4)

Postby GrandAdmiral » Sun May 29, 2011 9:17 am

Hi Raf

I'm having trouble importing keys into the new SSH manager, it recognises I have the ssh.key file on the iPod but when I select OK to import it doesn't appear on the list. I've tried the key file I had for 2.02 (no passphrase) and also my normal key file (passphrase) and both have the same result. Also could you provide some more detail (a guide would be great) on how to use the SSH Manager.

I'll review the import function for 2.4.1. Thanks for the feedback.

About how to use the SSH Key manager. It's really simple. To create a new key, simply tap on "+" and select the kind of key (RSA for SSH1, RSA for SSH2 (recommended) or DSA). The key will then be created (this takes some time, almost a minute, depends on how fast your device is).
The new key is then shown in the list. you can tap it to:
-Rename: Rename the key, this is recommended.
-Change Passphrase: this allows you to add a passphrase to the key, or change the passphrase
-E-Mail: it will email the public key so you can add it to whichever servers you're going to connect to
-Copy into PasteBoard: it will insert the public key into the device's pasteboard. You can then connect to your ssh server, and paste the key into the authorized_keys file

I want to use an existing key, how can I import it? Currently I have the passphrase protected key in a file on my laptop.

You can rename your private key into ssh.key and place it in Remoter's Documents folder (you can do this by dragging it into iTunes' App file sharing for Remoter (ask me if you need more help with this step).

Then in Remoter, open the SSH Manager and tap on "Import". You will be prompted for your passphrase, and the key will hopefully be imported into Remoter.

On raf's answer when importing the existing ssh.key file .....
The existing ssh.key in Documents seems recognised, shown.. But then
The problems are ...
- The passphrase (in my case) is supposed to remain empty
- The imported ssh.key doe NOT show in the SSH manager

What's next ?
Can i copy/rename to .ppk extension to have it shown ? (currently in puttygen format, and worked perfectly until the latedst remoter upgrade).

If there is no passphrase, then simply leave the passphrase field empty when you import it.
Once imported, it won't be called "ssh.key", it will be called "ssh0001" (or similar).

As stated, it does not actually get imported and/or renamed.

However, I copied the ssh.key into myname.ppk and it now shows, is selectable for the connection, and works!

So, -my- problem is solved, but there is a defect in your program when transporting existing ssh.key into the latest (very well done) release.

Thanks, Gerard.
The import function is meant for people generating an ssh key externally (using ssh-keygen for example), and wanting to use it on Remoter 2.4+
What I think happened in your case is that you were using your own generated key in Remoter 2.02, and Remoter had already internally converted it, so all you needed to do was rename it to .ppk for remoter to pick it up.

Thanks for letting me know you got it working.

I could use help with this step. Is there a app named "File Sharing" that I need to download?

No, it's part of iTunes. This is what you need to do:

-Connect your device to your computer
-Start iTunes
-Select your device on iTunes
-Click on the Apps Tab
-Scroll all the way down to find the File Sharing section.

There is a screenshot here:
