AppleTV

Postby jpf55 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 2:05 pm

Hi I have just bought and installed Remoter on my iPad, I have set it up for the iMac and the AppleTV.
Control of the iMac is fine
However, I cannot control the main menu of the AppleTV with Remoter, I do see it though.
I can control it using Screenshare or RemoteDesktop on the Mac or Apple's remote app on the iPad.
I can however control it once I have launched an application such as XMBC.

Any ideas,

Thanks

I didn't realize the AppleTV had Screen Sharing. Is this a jailbroken device? This is not tested.

Yes it is jailbroken, that's how I can be running XBMC on the AppleTV.

Regardless of Screen sharing being tested or not, Remoter sees the AppleTV, connects to it, shows me the menu but will not control it. Yet, after having launched XBMC from another source, Remoter has no trouble controlling that app.

jpf55,

Like I said. This scenario has not been tested by us, and we don't have any jailbroken AppleTVs to test with. It sounds like a problem on the server side. I'm really at a loss as to how to help you. Still, if you figure it out, I would welcome your explanation.

Thanks,
Raf.

There's an App for that, "Remote". Not remoter.

rpoland is right. Remote is probably the app you want. You don't need two apps, just "Remote", it's a remote control for the AppleTV/iTunes by Apple.

At the risk of being repetitive,
Remote controls the Frontrow on the AppleTV but not XBMC on the AppleTV.
On the filp side, Remoter controls XBMC on the AppleTV but not Frontrow.

So, how is Remote capable of doing somthing Remoter can't?
Does Apple have access to stuff that prgogrammers don't?
Forget that my AppleTV is jailbroken, it would be a plus if Remoter could control the Apple TV.

Well, Remote can control FrontRow, because that's what it's built to do. It's not a VNC client, it's a "front-row" client.
Remoter is a VNC client, but it seems the VNC server running on jb AppleTVs doesn't allow you to control front-row for whatever reason. This is really out of Remoter's control, unfortunately.

Thanks raf, that's an answer that makes sense.

P.s.: Remoter is still a great app.
