Connection issue

Hi,

I'm not currently in front of my mac but will be later.

I've connected via wi-fi between my iphone and macbook without fault or issues. The purpose for this app for me though is to connect when I'm not at home.

I've got a little confused with the port setup for my router (netgear / sky).

I understand I need to open port 5900 but have a couple of questions relevant to that:

1. Do I open Inbound, Outbound or both?
2. Do I put 5900 as the start and end or do I need further details?
3. Do I put the supposed IP for the laptop itself or the router? ie: 123.456.7.1 or 123.456.7.2
4. What would I need 5901 or 5902 for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Hi!,
The easiest way to do what you want is to use RemoterFusion (it requires an in-app purchase, but you can try it for free for 24 hours. You can find it here: http://remoterfusion.rafsoftware.com). (RF requires a router with UPnP or NAT-PMP support).

If you want to do it manually, then yes, you need to map port TCP 5900 to your computer's IP (inside your LAN).

1/2. I recommend you use in: 5900 out: 5900 (so the router opens port 5900 to the outside world, and routes its traffic to port 5900 in your LAN). I'm not sure what else your router is asking for. But the port needs to be TCP (not UDP) also. Feel free to post a screenshot of the router configuration screen.
3. In the port forwarding configuration you need to specify the IP of your laptop, yes. This is the IP in the LAN, usually something like 192.168.x.x or 10.10.x.x
4. You don't need to do anything with any ports other than 5900 unless you want to be able to connect to multiple computers in your LAN from the outside world.

Hope this helps,
Raf.

Hi,

I've bought / installed remoterfusion. The only way to test it at home is to set my phone to wi-fi off. It works but doesn't stay connected for more than about a minute. Is this due to 3g signal? I'll only be able to test wi-fi from work tomorrow.

Hi, no, it shouldn't disconnect after a minute even on 3G, unless your signal is really poor. I personally use it over 3G and even listen to music through it (music playing on my Mac) while driving, all this over 3G. So it should definitely work over 3G.

Yeah just keeps timing out and reconnecting. 3g signal should be fine!

And the app also seems to crash when trying to reconnect!

Hi!, I'm very interested in getting to the bottom of this. Please email me at support AT rafsoftware DOT com.
If you can, please email me the log file from RemoterFusion (you can copy it from the "info" tab.

Thanks so much!,
Raf.

Will do.

I can't even connect this morning. It just goes from connecting to reconnecting to reconnecting to reconnecting.

Where do I get the log from sorry?

You're stuck in a reconnect loop. This happens because connection is not working, and you've told Remoter in the past to auto-reconnect.
So you don't get to see the error message.
To break out of this loop, go into Remoter Config, and find "Auto-Reconnect". Then turn it off (it's all the way towards the bottom).

To get the log file for RemoterFusion. Click on the icon on the top menubar, then go into the "Info" tab. There is a "Debug Log" there, simply copy and paste it into an email to support AT rafsoftware DOT com

Thanks!,
Raf.
