Aspect ratio completely wrong

My MacBook Air with OS X 10.9.1 is giving me trouble.
When I start the VNC sessions with a remote Mac Mini, the aspect ratio is completely wrong, and makes it unusable. See attached screenshot.
I cannot resize the window, 1:1 zoom level does nothing. Fill screen does nothing. The only thing I can do is Full Screen (Carbon).
