Remoter VNC 3.4.2 is out!

Postby raf » Mon Apr 23, 2012 7:59 pm

Remoter VNC 3.4.2 was approved, and is now out! (http://itunes.apple.com/app/id369626098)

What's new:
* iPad (3) retina display support
* Updated RDP module
* Active session is now shown in a different color in the session list
* Added some extra resolutions for RDP (user requested)
* Alternative French keyboard mapping by user Eddyk4
* NOTE!: RDP now requires NLA for most connections. Be sure to enable NLA in the session editor for your RDP sessions

AS ALWAYS, be sure to backup your device in iTunes, before updating to a new version, in case, you need to revert back to the last version.

Fixes:
* Fixed problem with special keys toolbar appearing behind bottom toolbar in certain cases
* Fixes to eliminate problems with multiple keyboard events (external keyboard)
* All sessions, except the current one are now hidden, to prevent some problems
* Fixes to alert position so that it doesn't appear behind the keyboard in some cases
* Keyboard state is not restored anymore, this was causing some issues for some users
* Fixed problem where SSH/Telnet buffer resolution height was reduced by toolbar height even in fullscreen mode! (This only if the solid toolbars setting was on)
* Reduced reconnect time from 5 to 1 seconds

I don't detect a difference in my display. I'm still getting display artifacts that seem to be based on resolution interpolation and, when I go 1 to 1, it seems as if it thinks my display doesn't have the resolution it should.

Is there a way to select from available resolutions?

If you use RDP, then you can select the desired resolution in the session editor. For VNC, the resolution is selected on the server side. Usually your desktop resolution. Try adjusting it to match your device's.
BTW, there is no interpolation done, and all scaling is done in hardware by the device's GPU (this is why scaling is so smooth).

I'm not using RDP. I'm using VNC. I have the VNC server running at a resolution of 1280x960x24.

I connect to it through remoter VNC and can display it, but if I go 1 to 1 zoom level, the entire screen doesn't show up on my ipad screen. Shouldn't it, if the ipad is running in its native resolution?

And I get graphical artifacts, mostly at the bottom of the screen where the various application icons or the shell session tabs are, making selecting the right tab or application more of a hit or miss type of affair. There are times when the artifacts show up on the terminal screen I'm using such that I might have to run a command 3 or 4 times in that screen before i can actually make out what the output is.

On other platforms, I use other VNC clients (tightVNC, UltraVNC) on both linux and windows connecting to the same server, and don't have the same problem so I don't think the issue is server-side.

The iPad resolution is 1024x768 (or 768x1024 depending on the orientation).
Please try changing to 32bpp and/or increasing the JPEG quality slider to reduce some of the compression artifacts.

Hope this helps!,

The new iPad's resolution is actually twice the 1024x768 the old iPads have. So it's 2048x1536, which is not recommended, as it's way too high. I still recommend the 1024x768.

alright, now I'm confused.

I see, in the configuration, where you can change the JPEG quality, but I can't see where you can set the resolution.

So, I'm stuck with displaying a 1280x960 VNC session on a 1024x768 screen and scrolling?

I was hoping to get the whole thing on the screen and zoom in to the sections that I wish to work on. the 1280x960 was chosen because I also work on various other computers on the same VNC session and that's pretty much the minumum I can have and still get some reasonable work done.

What do you mean by "way too high"? I can see setting a VNC server window to that resolution would be problematic because of bandwidth problems at some downstream locations. However, I didn't think it would be a problem to display my full 1280x960 on the resolution that the ipad3 is reputed to support.
