French keyboard, SSH and special characters (pipe...)

I just bought Remoter Version 1.0.8 (3.6.1) from the (Mac) App Store. I run OS X Lion.
I have configured SSH sessions to Linux and OpenBSD servers but can't issue pipe ( | ), square brackets ( [ ] ) and curly brackets ( { } ).
On my (french) MacBook Pro keyboard, pipe is "Shift-Alt-L", brackets are "Shift-Alt-(" and "Shift-Alt-)", curly brackets are "Alt-(" and "Alt-)".
I have tried configuring "Direct", "UnitedStates" and "French" in the "Keyboard Settings" of Preferences but it doesn't work.
What do I have to configure to be able to issue those special characters?
