Accessing keys with Alt

I'm connecting to a Linux VNC server with a German keyboard layout. The keyboard is set to direct in the preferences. At least on a German keyboard some characters can only be accessed in combination with the Alt key - like the @ sign which is entered by pressing Alt and L.
Tweaking the preferences did not help. Any ideas?
