Poor performance vs CoRD

Hi,
I purchased Remoter yesterday as it supports RDP over SSH - previously I'd been doing it manually with SSH and CoRD but it was getting pretty tedious.
The good news is that remoter works and it is nice an easy to use.
Unfortunately I have noticed that its performance is significantly worse than logging into a server with..
ssh -L 3389:desktop:3389 user@remote.gateway.com
And then pointing CoRD and localhost:3389
I have set the network to cellular, and disabled audio and font smoothing but CoRD is still much snappier.
The link is identical in both cases (my home ADSL).
