Random Crashes with latest release and latest beta

Random Crashes with latest release and latest beta

Postby MerkaBa » Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:49 am

One of the bugs developers and users like a lot, since they are so great to describe and so easy to reproduce, lol....

Using Remoter (I have the current release AND the current beta installed) mainly to connect to my private proxy via SSH tunnel and run one or more SSH sessions to my webservers.

Runs great for sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes about one hour - then it just vanishes. No error message, no "this application has crashed" notification, nothing, nada... just gone.

It seems to happen more often if the session is producing a bit of traffic (e.g. downloading something via the proxy or watching video), but even this can not be reproduced reliably.

Quite annoying - any ideas what might cause those crashes?

Running on Lion 10.7.5 on MBPro (Mid 2009)
No weird system tools that I would expect to interfere with Remoter, and Little Snitch has been told to let Remoter do whatever he wants...

I am at a loss here and have reverted back to using SSH Tunnel Manager for the tunnels and OS X shell to manually connect my SSH terminal sessions...
Help and a fix would be greatly appreciated - Remoter looks better and would save me a lot of unnecessary typing - if it worked reliably...

Just an update: after few weeks more, it has become clear that this behaviour indeed has to do with the amount of traffic that is sent through the tunnel.

Having a console open and typing in some linux commands, run top or iftop or that kind of thing: no problem, runs for hours (usually).

Surfing over a SSH tunnel with tinyproxy at the other end and watching *tube or downloading bigger files - crash to nirvana after a couple of minutes.

Thanks for the report!

Any crash dumps? That would really help.
They are under Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ (in your home directory -- note that Library might be hidden, you can use the Terminal to find them)
Open the terminal and type:
open ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter

Thank you!,

Strangely enough: none. Sorry Raf.

Edit: not so strange, recently updated to Mountain Lion, lol. Re-testing with latest beta NOW.

Another session (beta 1.3.7 on 10.8.2) just ended in nirvana, after approx 40 min of downloads/video streaming.

No crash report or dump, nothing whatsoever.

Just vanishes into thin air.

If it happens again, could you also capture the log file?
For RemoterBeta, you can find it here:
"Library/Application Support/Remoter/.log/" in your home folder

(So if you open a terminal window, you can get to it by doing:)
open ~/Library/Application\ Support/Remoter/.log/

Make sure to get it after Remoter crashes, as it's overwritten every time Remoter starts.
Thanks,
Raf.
